Blackjack History

Blackjack has a long history that historians can’t quite put a nail on an exact date. The origin of blackjack was dated back to the 17th century in France where in French casinos they played a game called vingt en un. Vingt en un means twenty one in French and the game was very similar to the blackjack we all play today although there we’re some slight differences in the rules of the game. Most people can agree that this is when blackjack originated although there are some sceptics who believe the game can be traced back even further then the 17th century.

Blackjack only migrated into North America after the French Revolution and when it came here it gained a lot of popularity. There we’re no laws on gambling and card games at that time so anyone could play the game wherever they wished. As time went on though laws we’re enforced stopping gambling because they realized gambling encouraged crime and ruined communities. Once the laws we’re created and marshals we’re enforcing them the game took a dive in popularity as it had to become an underground game so that the people playing it wouldn’t be arrested.

In 1931 Nevada legalized gambling and this was the new birth of card games and it gained a lot of steam even back then. Las Vegas started and people flocked to the city so that they could gamble there money. It became a popular destination for gambling and now it’s the leading city in the world for gambling.

In 1953 blackjack was studied for the very first time and a group of people calculated the variables to reduce the houses advantage in the game. In 1956 there findings we’re published so that everyone could see the results that we’re formed. In 1962 a Professor used the above information to write a book named “Beat the Dealer” which became a New York Times bestseller. After the book was written the rules of the game we’re slightly changed by the casinos to limit the damage the book had caused.

Over time there have been a lot of people who have tried to cheat this game in the casinos and some people have gotten away with it. They’ve used computers and chips to calculate odds for them to win the hand and the smart people adapted there brains so that they could count cards. Card counters are feared by the major casinos and the casinos hire many employees to stop people from cheating them.

Blackjack wouldn’t be the same without the incredible history behind the game. It’s been around for centuries and generations of people have played this amazing game. It’s very easy to play which is another reason why it’s been around so long and I only wish we knew what the stakes we’re back then.
